There is but one Lord, Jesus Christ,
through whom all things came and through whom we live.
1 Corinthians 8:6
Jesus is Lord!
This is the theme of the year 2024 for Knaphill Baptist Church.
‘Jesus is Lord’ is a very old confession in the Christian church. We already find it in Acts 10:36, where the apostle Peter says: ‘…the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.’ Peter is speaking to Cornelius, a non-Jew, and tells him that the good news of Jesus is for him as well.
When the angels announce Jesus’ birth in Luke 2:11, they proclaim: ‘Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.’ In those days that was a political statement: it claims that not the emperor in Rome was the most important person on earth, but Jesus was! In the second century, Christians were even persecuted because they did not declare the Roman emperor as their ‘Lord’ (the Greek word is: kurios).
What does it mean that Jesus is our Lord today?
- That we belong to him
- That we live in obedience to him
- That we are loyal to him and not to what the world dictates us
- It’s about Christ alone as the centre of our lives
Who is ruling us, or dictating us how we should live? What we see on television, what celebrities do, what adverts try to sell us? On the contrary, when Jesus is the centre of our lives we are free: free from slavery of sin, greed, money, what other people think we should be.
So let’s walk with Jesus, in a relationship filled with pure love and joy. Is Jesus your Lord? It’s the best choice you can make this year!
