KBC’s Anniversary was a bit different this year. Spread over two Sundays, perhaps we decided to emulate the slightly more famous birthday lady, and have two birthdays… Or maybe you would describe it as a party that lasted two weeks? Whichever way you look at it, it was well worth the extra!
Last week we met together as a church family – taking the Good Samaritan as our subject, thinking about being the hands and feet of the church and being challenged like the “Expert in Law” to whom Jesus told the parable in Luke 10 vv25-37 to “go and do likewise”. We renewed our declaration and faith and shared together – in a covenant declaration and over lunch. You can listed to Julia’s sermon here: Sermons.
This week we were delighted to be joined by the Rev Jerry Newson, the newest of the SEBA regional ministers who is passionate about encouraging small churches, and those who pastor to the pastors. His address, based on Acts 2 vv44-47, looked at the Healthy Characteristics of a small church.
- Only in a small church will everybody know everybody else’s name.
- Only on a small church does the opportunity to love each other properly really exists
- Only in a small church can the pastor and leaders be most effective at supporting the whole church (not having to work between multiple pastors others like and building managers… )
Jerry’s key definition isthat “A pioneering small church is the authentic expression of church today”. Being small is a good thing!
Jerry focussed on the “can-do” attitudes that make a healthy church – being bold, open to change, knowing the mission of the church and delivering it, and contrasted it with the Church in Sardis that Jesus spoke to in Revelation 3 v1 saying “You might look alive but you’re dead”.
